How radon fits into overall indoor air quality alongside humidity, particulates, ventilation, and combustion safety, and why the causes often overlap.
Radon is one part of indoor air quality, and it is the part with the clearest link to a serious long-term health outcome. But it rarely exists in isolation.
The building conditions that let radon in, soil contact, pressure imbalance, and low ventilation, also govern moisture, particulates, and combustion safety. Treating them together produces better results than chasing each separately.
The main indoor air parameters
A useful assessment covers a handful of measurable conditions.

Why the causes overlap
An open crawl space releases both soil gas and moisture into the floor structure above. Sealing it with a membrane and depressurizing beneath addresses both at once.
Similarly, an exhaust-dominated ventilation scheme raises soil gas entry while also risking backdrafting of combustion appliances. Correcting the pressure balance improves both conditions.
Ventilation, carefully
More outdoor air dilutes indoor contaminants including radon, which is good. But how the air is moved matters enormously.
Exhaust-only ventilation depressurizes the house and pulls more soil gas in, which can make radon worse while improving other parameters. Balanced ventilation, supplying and exhausting equal volumes, avoids that trade-off.
Filtration and its limits
Good filtration is worthwhile for particulates, allergens, and wildfire smoke, which is a real seasonal concern across San Diego County.
It does nothing meaningful for radon. Filters capture particles; radon is a gas that enters continuously from below. Source control is the only effective approach.
Humidity as the linchpin
Keeping relative humidity between 30 and 50 percent limits mold and dust mite growth and improves comfort. In coastal San Diego, marine air makes the upper end harder to hold.
For homes with crawl spaces, sealing the soil usually does more for indoor humidity than adding dehumidification, because it removes the source rather than treating the symptom.
A sensible order of operations
Control the sources first: seal soil contact, fix moisture intrusion, vent combustion properly, and reduce chemical sources where practical.
Then ventilate in a balanced way, and finally add filtration for what remains. Reversing that order produces expensive equipment addressing symptoms of problems that could have been eliminated.
