Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after smoking, and the leading cause among people who have never smoked. That finding did not come from laboratory extrapolation; it came from decades of studying underground miners and, later, from pooled residential studies across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Understanding the risk clearly matters, because radon is easy to either dismiss or panic about. Neither reaction leads to good decisions.
How radon causes harm
Radon gas is inhaled and mostly exhaled again. The damage comes from its short-lived decay products, which are solid particles that attach to airborne dust and deposit in the airways.
Once lodged in lung tissue, those particles emit alpha radiation directly into nearby cells. Alpha particles travel only a short distance, which sounds reassuring but is the opposite: all of that energy is delivered into a very small volume of tissue, causing concentrated DNA damage.
Most damaged cells repair themselves or die. A small fraction survive with mutations, and over many years of continuous exposure, the probability that one of those mutations initiates a cancer rises.
Risk is cumulative and probabilistic
There is no threshold below which radon is known to be harmless, and no sudden danger point above which harm is certain. Risk scales with the concentration multiplied by the years of exposure.
This is why a moderately elevated level in a bedroom occupied every night for fifteen years can matter more than a briefly high reading in a rarely used space. It is also why reducing a level from 8 to 2 pCi/L delivers most of the available benefit even though the result is not zero.
Who faces the greatest risk
Some groups carry meaningfully higher risk from the same exposure.
- People who smoke or have smoked: radon and tobacco smoke multiply each other's effect rather than simply adding.
- Children, who breathe more air relative to body size and have more remaining years for disease to develop.
- People who work from home or spend most of their time indoors.
- Anyone whose bedroom or main workspace sits directly on a slab or over a crawl space.
What radon does not cause
Radon exposure is not associated with headaches, nosebleeds, fatigue, rashes, or respiratory infections. There are no acute symptoms of residential radon exposure at any level found in homes.
This is genuinely important. Households sometimes suspect radon when someone feels unwell indoors, and the honest answer is that the symptoms point to something else, most often humidity, mold, combustion byproducts, or inadequate ventilation. Radon works silently over decades.
Putting the risk in perspective
The practical framing is straightforward. Radon exposure is one of the few significant health risks in a home that can be measured precisely, fixed reliably, and verified afterward.
A test is inexpensive. Mitigation, where needed, is a bounded project with a predictable result. Very few health risks offer that combination of clarity and control.
