All radon tests answer the same question, but they answer it with different precision, over different time frames, and with different levels of tamper resistance. Choosing correctly saves both money and rework.

Charcoal canisters
A passive short-term device containing activated charcoal that adsorbs radon over 2 to 7 days, then goes to a laboratory for analysis.
Inexpensive and widely available, they are a reasonable screening tool. Their limitations are that they weight the final hours of exposure more heavily than the first, they can be affected by high humidity, and they produce a single number with no hourly detail and no tamper evidence.
Alpha track detectors
A small plastic film inside a filtered chamber records microscopic damage tracks from alpha particles. Deployed for 90 days to a year, then analyzed in a laboratory.
This is the best method for establishing a true annual average, because it integrates across seasons. It is the wrong tool for a transaction, since the results arrive months after any deadline.
Liquid scintillation vials
Small vials containing an absorbing medium, deployed for a few days and analyzed by a laboratory using scintillation counting.
Accurate and less humidity-sensitive than charcoal, but still a passive single-number method with the same lack of hourly resolution.
Continuous radon monitors
Electronic instruments that measure and log radon hourly, typically alongside temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and motion or tilt.
They are the most informative option. Hourly data reveals whether a home is consistently elevated or spikes during particular conditions, and the environmental log documents whether closed-house conditions actually held. Results are available immediately on retrieval.
This is the standard for real estate testing and for verifying mitigation performance, and it is increasingly the default for any homeowner who wants a real answer rather than a screening number.
